Abstract

Born in the early 1920s in a small fishing village on the south coast of England, Victoria had a strict upbringing. She was given little opportunity to see or explore different places or take many decisions for herself. This was largely due to her father, a rigid and inflexible man who ruled his wife and three children in an environment of firm discipline. He physically disciplined the children even when they were in their early twenties. He demanded respect from his family but instead they were somewhat frightened of him.
