Abstract

Much information on cis-acting elements has been exploited in the creation of a battery of readily available gene-transfer vectors, each with its own strengths and weaknesses, many of which are presented in abbreviated form in Table 2-1. In my review of these creations, I will illustrate how they can be used, as well as provide sufficient information to allow you to incorporate your own gene or cDNA inserts into these vectors. Before I describe this collection of gene-transfer vectors, it is important to discuss two fundamentally different approaches to gene transfer: transient transfection and stable transfection.
