Abstract

Twenty-five years after the first European settlement of British convicts and their military guards was established at Sydney Cove in 1788, the colony was still incapable of producing enough food to feed itself. One hundred years later a continent as large as Europe had been largely occupied by European settlers, and two hundred years after settlement it supports 16 million people, who enjoy a high standard of living and export 70 per cent of their agricultural products, most of which are similar to those produced in Europe.
