The story ‘The Falling’ [Upadanie] was finished by Kharms on 7 September 1940,1 and relates therefore to the final period of its author’s creativity (1940–1). It is well known that this period saw Kharms’s definitive transition from verse to a prose which retained the best of the features elaborated in the 1930s. In this respect, the story ‘The Falling’ is a particularly important one and for this reason it has been chosen for analysis here.
