Abstract
Today almost everyone aspires to a holiday, to travel, to see the world, to experience new cultures, and to participate in an exciting activity. Tourism is a word used to describe all these actions and desires. But to define tourism is not easy as it covers such a multitude of activities. The tourist is often referred to as: an excusionist, a day-tripper, a visitor, a holidaymaker, or a traveller. A broad definition that covers most uses of the term has been given by Professor David Jeffries in The Development of Tourism, (1985):
Essentially tourists and excusionists are people...staying overnight or on a day trip in places other than their normal place of residence for any of a wide range of purposes – leisure, ie recreation, holiday, health, study, religion, or sports; business, and for other purposes.
