Abstract

More than 20 years ago Galindo and co-workers (1967) found that extracellular micro-iontophporetic application of y-aminobutyric acid or GABA had substantial inhibitory effects on cuneate neurones. Subsequently, several investigators using different techniques (Penny et al.,1983, Rustioni et al.,1983, Spreafico et al.,1983, Newberry and Simmonds, 1984, Rustioni et al., 1984, Westman et al., 1984, Blomqvist et.al., 1985, Ralston, 1985, Basbaum et al., 1986, Barbesi et al., 1986, Simmonds, 1987, Matthews et al., 1988) published reports emphasizing the role of GABA as an inhibitory transmitter at different subcortical levels of the somatosensory systems. The immuno-cytochemistry of these studies employed initially an indirect method to demonstrate GABA using antiserum against glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), the enzyme responsible for the synthesis of GABA.
