Transformation of Spatio-temporal Information by Somatosensory Neural Networks

Abstract

The single cell recording techniques and psychophysical approach developed by Vernon Mountcastle have been employed in our laboratory to understand an important aspect of tactile sensation: the sense of motion on the skin. Although a variety of conventional objects including brushes, edges and moving gear wheels, have been used to demonstrate a host of feature detecting properties in cortical neurons, none of these stimuli have answered the basic question: how is motion encoded?
