Abstract
Throughout this book, there has been emphasis placed on the management of resources within an operating system, and on how effectively this management is performed. Through technological developments, the good utilisation of resources has become a less critical issue than in the early days of computing when processing power and memory were extremely expensive commodities. Nevertheless, the behaviour of computer systems as a whole is still of great concern. In many applications, the demand for processing capability is insatiable, and the wise and efficient usage of resources is still therefore a major issue for system designers.
