Abstract
This chapter commences by assessing the main economic issues currently confronting British Coal (BC). In so doing, it draws upon the findings of the Report on the Coal Industry prepared by the House of Commons Select Committee on Energy — the most recent official review of the prospects of the UK coal industry. Wherever appropriate, the data on performance have been updated to reflect the position at end March 1989 and more recently. The chapter concludes by examining some of the key uncertainties facing BC, including the implications of the impending privatisation of the electricity supply industry (ESI) in Great Britain and the growing salience of a range of environmental policy issues.
