Abstract

A nurse’s relationship with a patient has to be dynamic and flexible: the professional contact with a patient changes all the time. Some of these changes are brought about by the nurse, some by others and some by the person being cared for. Nursing roles within nurse-patient relationships influence the outcomes for patients. Nurses need to have the self-confidence to use roles with patients and to use their professional interpersonal skills to allow the relationships to mature.
