Abstract
In this chapter I shall compare some aspects of Hungarian and Finnish regulation of trade with socialist countries. The idea of undertaking this comparison evolved from discussions in Hungary concerning the Hungarian system of foreign trade with socialist countries. It is useful to study the experiences of a country such as Finland which has had to face challenges similar to those of Hungary. A deeper understanding of the choices made and solutions found by Finland could potentially influence the way Hungary will perceive and solve its own problems. However, I should like to stress in advance that my aim is simply to compare. A comparison of this sort might have various implications and offer several lessons. Still, I consider my attempt as just one of the possible approaches to a deeper understanding of the problems inherent in trade with CMEA countries. Hungary faces the challenge of discovering solutions to them.
