Preparing to do business in the Single Market is primarily a matter for individual companies. The aim of the Government is to encourage the process of wealth creation through a competitive and open economy; not just in the UK, but throughout the European Community. Nonetheless, there are ways in which the Government helps business in practical ways to meet the opportunities and challenges of the 1990’s. The main channel of this help is the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). Relevant government departments have specific responsibility for matters such as education, environment, health and safety and transport policy, in which they take the lead.
