To begin to develop the structured learning model, practice teachers and students need to incorporate some principles of learning into their approach to practice learning. This is the starting point for the development of the structured learning model. In this chapter basic issues are considered — such as what do we understand by ‘learning’. This is a prerequisite to enabling practice learning on placement. Some important educational models are reviewed, to explore the extent to which these can be used on placement. Also some practical checklists and suggestions for practice teachers and students to develop their thinking about learning are given at the end of the chapter.
