Abstract

Right at the beginning I should like to make it clear that neither Bednár nor Sloboda, nor Hudec has as yet been made part of the Slovak literary canon. Nor have they yet met with any general critical judgement as to whether they are ‘good’ writers or not. The reasons for that are characteristic of Slovak literary development since the mid 1950s, and are of general validity for any interpretative theory of works of fiction. In this chapter I wish, then, to concentrate both on the problem of the critical evaluation of Bednár, Sloboda and Hudec and on the question of the morality as a subgenre of prose fiction.
