Turkey is frequently represented as an exemplar of the process of structural adjustment through economic liberalization. This conclusion is based mainly on the export performance of the economy. Since 1980, Turkish exports have been increasing at an unprecedented rate, and that is interpreted to be a consequence of the economic policy applied during the 1980s.
