The Incidence of Amblyopia in Longstanding Untreated Infantile Esotropia

  • Chapter
Strabismus and Ocular Motility Disorders

Abstract

The purpose of this ongoing study is to establish the incidence of strabismic amblyopia as well as dissociated vertical deviation [DVD], latent nystagmus and anomalous optokinetic nystagmus [OKN] in cases of infantile esotropia who have reached visual adulthood without any form of treatment. Forty-six patients aged 12 years or more, with a history of onset of esotropia before 6 months of age underwent a full ocular motility examination. Particular reference was paid to the presence of DVD, latent nystagmus and anomalous OKN, regarded as 3 salient features suggestive of infantile esotropia. Of the first 46 cases in this series, 9 patients had amblyopia of greater than one line, 22 had DVD, 23 had latent nystagmus and 25 demonstrated anomalous OKN. The preliminary data suggests that the incidence of amblyopia in untreated infantile esotropia may be lower than that following early surgical intervention.
