Abstract
On a fine afternoon in May 1933 I took Edward for a walk round the school grounds at Abinger Hill, where he had just arrived as a new boy. I was ten, he nine, and since I was a year senior to him in the school I had been deputed to act as his ‘Big Brother’. The spring sunshine shone through the unfolding leaves, the birds sang cheerfully, and Edward explained to me in some detail the structure of Elgar’s cello concerto.
