Abstract
One could not meet Edward Boyle without at once realising that one was in the presence of a good man. It was impossible to imagine him doing anything which he knew was wrong, or even dubious. This is the stiffest criterion of character. But manifestly what was wrong, and what was shabby, in conduct repelled him. He disliked it in others; he would not tolerate it in himself.
