Abstract
To measure the amount of water flowing through a pipe you do not attempt to count the water molecules. The quantity of water flowing is measured in cubic metres per second. Similarly, when measuring an electric current in a wire scientists do not attempt to count the millions of electrons passing along. They measure the rate of flow of electric charge (electrons) in quantities, called coulombs, passing one point in a circuit each second.
