Abstract
The many Moorish tribes represent various mixings of Berber and Arab stock. Although the distinction is made in the Mauritanian census between White Moors (54 percent) and Black Moors (28 percent), this is no longer so much a question of color, as of patrilineal descent and status difference. The Tukulor and Fulani maintain distinct identities, but share a common language and culture. There are small numbers of Wolof, Sarakolé, and Haratin peoples in the country.
