Abstract
The ethnic classification selected for Mali is fairly inclusive. It is largely based on linguistic criteria, although cultural and identity factors strongly reinforce these criteria. The Fulani, Tuareg, and Songhai are identity groups. Within the Mande family, the Dyula are probably of Senufo origin. They have been placed with the Mandé (as was done in the Ivory Coast classification), however, for reasons of language and culture (Muslim). Mali also contains a small (1.6 percent) Moorish population. Other small groups in Mali are the Dogon (3 percent), Bobo (1 percent), and smaller numbers of Diawara, Bozo, Toucolor, Wolof, Mossi, Kagoro, Foulanke, and Dialonke. The droughts of the early 1970’s depleted the desert populations, especially the Tuaregs, but to an unknown degree.
