Abstract
The ethnic categories for Ethiopia are based on mixed levels of inclusion. In each case the groups comprising the categories are culturally and lingusitically related. The Galla (increasingly referred to as the Oromo), Somali and Afar are identity groups, as are the Amhara-Tigre (excluding the related Gurage and Harati). It should be noted that the Galla, Somali, and Afar have considerable cultural and lingusitic similarities and can be subsumed under a more general Eastern Cushitic category. In addition to these major groups there are populations of Agans (75,000), Saho-speaking peoples of Eritrea (43,000—1943 estimate), and the nomadic Ben-Amer. Since a census has never been carried out in Ethiopia, all population figures are estimates whose reliability is not ascertainable.
