Abstract
In ordnance manufacture Armstrongs early established a leading position. Apart from Woolwich, the only other major British producer was Joseph Whitworth, and his Manchester operations were soon on a considerably smaller scale than those at Elswick. There were however some smaller concerns which made major headway in various branches of the trade, including the manufacture of gun mountings and projectiles. Armstrongs absorbed some of these operations.
