Abstract

By the early twentieth century a number of the armament firms had become very large operations. In a sense they had outgrown their forms of organisation and control. This was partly owing to the persistence of the same persons in controlling positions, partly to the lack of efficient liaison between departments, and in part also to deficiencies in cost accounting. In all of these respects Armstrongs were quite clearly in difficulties.
