Summary
To fully realise the benefits of Flexible Manufacturing Cells (FMCS), it is important to consider their reliability before they are installed for production. This paper presents a general methodology for production reliability analysis of FMCs during the design and development stages. The proposed methods may also be used for on-line reliability prediction. FMC modelling by computer simulation is first carried out using SIMAN simulation language. The simulation results are used for generating system reliability models and evaluation by Event Tree Analysis (ETA) technique. A case study of production reliability of parts in a FMC is carried out. The production reliability of individual part-types and combination of these part-types are presented as an examples of results for the application of the methods used.
