Rule Based Design of Just-In-Time Component Manufacturing Cells

  • Chapter
Proceedings of the Twenty-eighth International

Abstract

Design and implementation of effective Just-In-Time (JIT) manufacturing systems frequently involves the transformation of process or functional layout plants into a number of manufacturing and assembly cells. Such cells should be capable of complete manufacture or assembly, wherever possible, of a defined family of components. This paper outlines a four stage methodology for the steady state analysis and design of component manufacturing cells. The four stages are gross load sizing, grouping by operation types, assessment of machine/people alternatives, and the selection of machine/people requirements. Rule based procedures which may be used for making decisions at different stages of the steady state analysis and design process are also outlined.
