Abstract
At the end of this chapter you should be able to:

Outline the advantages and disadvantages to be gained from the use of word processing systems, spreadsheets, simple database management software and integrated software packages.

Explain the basic principles of operation of word processors, spreadsheets and database management systems.

Discuss the ways in which quantity surveyors might use general purpose software.
