The Second Italian Novel:A Room with a View(1908)

Part of the How to Study Literature book series

A Room with a View was Forster’s third novel to be published but its writing history was a protracted and complex affair. Although the first novel he began, the ‘Lucy novel’, as he called it, was re-drafted several times and Forster deferred the completion of it twice in order to finish other novels. Maybe because of these difficulties, Forster’s own feelings towards this work seem ambivalent: looking back much later he called it his ‘nicest novel’ and records in his diary at the time that it was ‘liked by the young and business men’. This seems like damning with faint praise, but an examination of the plot may help to explain why.
