Abstract

Geographically, the fertiliser industry started in the Atacama Desert, with an important Chilean involvement from the early 1850s. It provided significant export and government revenues to the economy until 1930. Technological changes in this industry were accelerated by its close connection with the German war effort from 1914. Cheaper substitutes to the rather expensive Chilean nitrate were created.
