The Future of Japanese Banking

  • Chapter
Japanese Financial Growth

Abstract

Japanese banks today face many adaptations and opportunities. The adaptations are necessitated by the financial consequences of fundamental forces on the real side of the Japanese and world economies; the opportunities arise from the new types of asset and liability transformations that will inevitably be part of the adaptation process. Many of the fundamental forces can be identified today. Less clear, however, is the way these forces will affect demand and supply for different types of financial instruments. Even less clear are the opportunities that these demand and supply changes will provide for innovation, arbitrage, risk-sharing and transformation of asset characteristics.
