Abstract

Lyricism is out of fashion nowadays. Form and construction are considered prime virtues, and to call an artist intelligent is to pay him the highest compliment. Certainly, creative intelligence is a necessary ingredient of art, but it is wrong to place it above emotion. Pure abstraction may have a certain validity, but it is only when inspiration is combined with intellect that art reaches its highest pinnacle. Especially in troubled times, it is understandable that an artist will thirst for order, but there is a risk that formalism may come to be worshipped for its own sake. Only the great artist incorporates feelings and sensations to the enhancement of design.

Intelligence is the passion of youth. But life is the passion of the mature man. One lives by heart alone.
