Abstract
‘Managing people’ can be described as the directing and controlling of staff to ensure the achievement of the organisation’s goals. Any organisation, whether private company or public service, must recognise people as its most valuable asset if it is to be successful. The National Health Service is no exception; over three quarters of its total expenditure is made up of salaries and, as the largest single employer in Europe, it is vital that its managers have the skills to manage people effectively.
