Abstract
This chapter provides further treatment of the COMPUTE verb, and introduces fixed-point arithmetic and signed fields. Section 2 provides an introduction to facilities available for handling overflow and also offers a first look at the use of statement terminators in COBOL 85. The final section deals with the arithmetic verbs ADD, SUBTRACT, MULTIPLY and DIVIDE; this section may be omitted on a first reading, since use of the COMPUTE verb is adequate for all arithmetic operations and is simple to pick up for those with a grounding in Pascal and other high level languages.
