Abstract

The idea of ‘stress’ was introduced in Unit 4. (You might like to revise Unit 4 before continuing with Unit 8.) When a force is used to squash or compress a solid, the effect on the solid depends on its shape. A force spread over a large area will have less effect than the same force when concentrated on a small area.
