Abstract

Many of the essay-type questions on the Welfare State in the GCSE exam will be of the ‘Describe …’ or ‘Describe and explain …’ variety. Many will test your knowledge of the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834, the work of the Liberal governments 1906–1914 or the Acts passed by the Labour governments 1945–1951. There are many Acts and dates associated with the development of the Welfare State but you cannot reasonably be expected to learn them all. Try to remember the importance of each Act and how it affected the position of the poor.
