Abstract

This is a popular topic. You can expect to find at least one question on some aspect of social change on your exam paper. All the main examining consortia refer to urbanisation (the growth of towns) and housing and working conditions on their syllabuses. Be prepared for questions which link up topics or subtopics — for example, the Poor Law and public health, prisons and police, religion and the slave trade. You should know the terms of the Mines Act (1842), the Factory Acts and the most important Education Acts (see Section 6.4). If you have difficulty remembering the terms of each Act, try writing the main points down on a postcard. You can then test yourself on them whenever you have a free moment.
