Abstract

Usually a higher class position means that the person concerned is richer either through earnings or investment — this ‘wealth’ is the accumulation of money or property in its many forms. Wealth buys access to ‘life’s chances’: health care; education; housing; holidays. These life chances may thus influence such factors as expectation of life; infant mortality; height and weight of children; illness or school achievement.
