Abstract
No book on support for clients in the community would be complete without tribute to the veritable army of carers. Many people devote their lives to looking after a loved relative, often to the detriment of their own existence and interests, career prospects and pension rights, social outlets and, not uncommonly, their own health. Unselfishly fulfilling the unremitting demands of a loving duty can be physically taxing, emotionally draining and socially limiting.
