Abstract

This revised edition of Developments in British Politics 2 seeks to describe and explain the political changes of the 1980s. It is designed primarily as a text for undergraduate students of politics, but should prove useful to students of other subjects such as economics, public policy, sociology and public law, to school teachers and pupils and, we hope, to a more general readership. In editing it we have been conscious that most of the undergraduates for whom it is primarily intended will have no personal memories of any election before 1979 and only hazy recollection of any Prime Minister other than Margaret Thatcher. For these readers, events during the Edward Heath or James Callaghan years lack the familiarity and meaning which those of us who have lived through them take for granted.
