Abstract

The analysis in the major part of this book has been conducted on the basis of three broad assumptions. First, it is assumed throughout that factors of production, though perfectly mobile within countries, are perfectly immobile between them. Secondly, except in the cases of commodity and factor market distortions discussed in Chapters 10 and 11 and some of the discussion in Chapter 6, that both factor and commodity markets operate under conditions of perfect (atomistic) competition. Thirdly, there are no transportation costs. The purpose of this chapter is to consider some of the interesting topics that arise as a result of relaxing these assumptions.
