Pressure Sores: Clinical Aspects of Their Cost, Causation, and Prevention

  • Chapter

Abstract

Pressure sores are a recognised problem in hospitals, not only in the United Kingdom (Barbenel et al, 1977; Lowthian, 1979; Roberts and Goldstone, 1979; Hibbs, 1982; Wright et al, 1986) but also in countries as far apart as North America (Rubin et al, 1974; Gerson, 1975; Walldorf, 1976; Robinson et al, 1978; Allman et al, 1986), Australia (Childs and Rimmington, 1983), South Africa (Manley, 1978) and Scandinavia (Petersen and Bittman, 1971; Ek and Bowman, 1982). The frequency with which they have been recorded in hospitals ranges from 2.7 to 66 per cent, with the highest figures occurring in aged patients with fractured femurs (Roberts and Goldstone, 1979; Versluysen, 1986).
