Abstract
This analysis compares the development of abortion policy in England, France, Ireland, Italy, the United States and West Germany. These policies vary from strong constitutional protection of the woman’s autonomous choice in the United States to absolute constitutional protection of the life of the fetus in Ireland. The other nations have moderate policies which generally condition abortion upon defined medical, eugenic, or social circumstances.
