Abstract
Several recent studies have addressed the functional inter- vs. independence of central DA D-1 and D-2 receptor sites. D-1 and D-2 agonists generally appear synergistic in producing postsynaptic behavioural effects, and there is evidence to suggest that the simultaneous activation of both D-1 and D-2 receptors is required to achieve optimal motor stimulation in normosensitive rats (e.g. Walters et al. 1987). D-1/D-2 agonist interaction studies have, however hitherto been limited to conventional, “non-selective” D-2 agonists — capable of activating DA autoreceptors as well as postsynaptic DA receptors.
