Abstract

1840 (2 June) Born at Higher Bockhampton, in the parish of Stinsford, near Dorchester, at 8 a.m. At first thrown aside as dead, but saved by the observation and slap of the midwife. TH described his father, Thomas Hardy the Second, by profession a mason-cum-builder, as unpossessed of ‘the tradesman’s soul’ (Life, p. 21), whilst his mother, a cook before her marriage, was presented as of ‘unusual ability and judgement, and an energy that might have carried her to incalculable issues’ (Life, p. 8). The marriage was thus not entirely either equal or equable, its solemnisation (22 Dec 1839) having been precipitated by TH’s conception some weeks previously. Possibly born prematurely, TH suffered much physical weakness in his early years, and was not expected to survive. Of the more idyllic circumstantial physical surroundings of the family home, the early poem ‘Domicilium’ gives a full impression.
