Abstract
Anderson, Jane (born 1893), an attractive Georgia-born journalist and wife of the composer Deems Taylor, was introduced to the Conrads in April 1916. Her animated contacts with the family during that year produced contrasting reactions. While Conrad relished her presence and pronounced her ‘yum-yum’ (to RC, 20 Aug 1916), Jessie came to feel that ‘our fair American friend had been amusing herself at my expense’ (JCC, p. 207). In Paris in 1917, Borys was smitten by the charms of ‘the American flying girl’, as was Retinger in a more serious way.
