Abstract
This chapter examines the performance of European defence companies participating in cooperation ventures to fulfil national procurement requirements, and evaluates whether these cooperation agreements are economically efficient. The cost-benefits of international cooperation are assessed by analysing case-studies in three sectors of the defence market: the Thomson-GTE and Plessey-Rockwell agreements to supply a battlefield communications system to the US Army, the British Aerospace/McDonnell-Douglas and Rolls-Royce/Pratt & Whitney agreements to produce the Harrier fighter aircraft, and the Sikorsky-Fiat and European consortium bids for Westland Helicopters.
