Abstract

This chapter introduces the topic of molecular spectroscopy by considering the nature of electromagnetic radiation and its interaction with molecules. The basic principles of quantum chemistry are introduced to assist in the understanding of electronic, vibrational and rotational transitions of energy within molecules. The application of molecular spectroscopy in the study of the structure of simple molecules is illustrated with a number of worked examples and questions.
