Abstract
The sensation of ‘flicker’ is evoked when intermittent light stimuli are presented to the eye; as the frequency of presentation is increased a point is reached—the critical fusion frequency—at which the flicker sensation disappears to be replaced by the sensation of continuous stimulation. The study of flicker has turned out to be a valuable method of approach to the fundamental problems of visual phenomena—it is amenable to fairly accurate measurement and it represents a perceptual process intermediate in complexity between intensity discrimination and form perception.
