Abstract

Economic development in the XX Century has taken place against a background of increasingly close links between science, technology and economic life. Industrial performance, in particular, can be seen as a reflection of the degree of integration between the research laboratory, the design engineer and the factory floor. Thus, the tsarist legacy in science and technology and the developments during the first decade of Soviet power were of key importance to the industrialisation programme which began with the first five year plan.
