Summary

A system to generate the geometric information needed for NC machining of a free-form curve is presented in this paper. In this system the geometric model of a curve is generated in the computer from 3-coordinate measuring data of a solid model. To describe the curve mathematicaly, the theory of splines is used. A cutter path for NC machining is generated from the geometric model of the curve.

A new method for cubic spline curve interpolation in NC machining is also presented. The main advantages of this new interpolation method are higher precision and less memory space than that of the straight-line or circular interpolation.
